Tennis courts slated for repairs

Hartselle School Board has accepted an offer from Shelby Contracting, Inc. to upgrade the tennis courts at Hartselle Junior High School for $41,126.
The decision was made Monday night following a discussion with Athletic Director Bob Young and was made subject to the property being deeded to the school system by the City Council as previously promised. The council approved the change in deed Tuesday night.
Young told the board the work will consist of adding 20 feet to the courts on the north side, reversing the direction of four of the six courts from east-west to north-south and re-asphalting and refinishing the entire playing surface. This would bring all of the courts up to sanction standards.
However, he said because of cold weather the work won’t likely be done until after the next tennis season is completed.
Board Chairman Dr. Andy Dukes said the city has agreed to help with site preparation work and Hartselle Utilities has offered some poles to help with the lighting.
Young said the courts will serve the needs of both Hartselle High and Hartselle Junior High Schools for several years. They will remain open for public use.

The board meeting was held at Crestline Elementary School. Third grade choral students sang Christmas carols for entertainment and Principal Robin Varwig gave a positive report on student test score results in 2005-06.
