Officers for the Jan. 16 special school tax referendum affecting Morgan County Schools were appointed by the Morgan County Commission at its last regular meeting.
The referendum stems from the expiration of a 7.3 mill property tax on Sept. 30, 2006. County school officials are asking voters to renew the tax for 30 years. They say the approximately $500,000 per year it generates is essential to the well being of the school system. If approved, the first year of the tax would become due and payable on Oct. 1.
The referendum does not include voters who reside in Hartselle and Decatur; however, some of the voting precincts in those cities will be open to accommodate out-of-city residents who vote there.
