Jan. 4, 1957—Mr. and Mrs. Ray Howell moved into their beautiful new brick home on East Main Street today. Taking the old Howell home were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Burks, formerly of Huntsville. Mr. Burks is a druggist at Gilchrist Pharmacy.
Jan. 4, 1957—Coal can now be bought around the clock, day or night, at Hartselle Ice &Coal Co., thanks to a new automatic vending machine installed at his business by J. C. Stroup.
Jan. 5, 1957— At this point early in 1957 there are more than 200 employees of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency who commute daily from homes in Morgan County to Huntsville, plus 28 contractor workers. Maj. Gen. John B. Medaris is commander of ABMA.
Jan. 6, 1957—Elvis Presley passed his pre-induction physical in Memphis today. Many Hartselle girls are already dreading when Elvis will be a part of the U.S. Army and probably sent overseas.
Jan. 7, 1957—The Morgan County Board of Registrars is in session at the courthouse for two weeks beginning today to sign up new voters.
Jan. 7, 1957—The junior Girl Ambassadors of the First Baptist Church held their first meeting of 1957 this afternoon in the home of Jane Wesson.
Jan. 8, 1957—Harold Ray Williams was hired as a Hartselle fireman by the city council in session tonight. He will fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Comer Henderson who was fire chief. W. B. Halbrooks, already a fireman, was elevated to the chief’s position.
Hartselle now has 16 firefighters, four full-time and 12 volunteers.
Jan. 8, 1957—State Senator Joe Calvin spoke to the Hartselle Kiwanis Club tonight on the subject of “Morality in Government.” (The talk was a brief one.)
Jan. 9, 1957—Veteran Hartselle Postmaster John T. Cooper will retire from this position in the very near future.
Jan. 10, 1957—Robert W. Clemons has taken over the ownership and management of the Star Market on Main Street as successor to his father, D. P. Clemons. The senior Mr. Clemons, a groceryman for 29 years, has taken this action because of declining health.
Jan. 10, 1957— Mahlon A. Hartselle, Jr., is the new sales representative for Allstate Insurance in Morgan County.
