Property tax collections in Morgan County for 2006 have reached $40.4 million with mail-in payments still being processed, according to Revenue Commis-sioner Amanda Scott.
The deadline for making payment without penalty was Dec. 31. Payments received after that date are subject to a $5 delinquent fee and 1 percent interest per month on the unpaid balance.
Delinquent taxpayers can expect to receive a notice in the mail later this month
Property owners who are behind in paying their ad valorem taxes for 2006 can expect to receive a delinquent notice in the mail later this month. Payments may be made on line to www.co.morgan.alus or in person at the courthouse or the satellite office in Hartselle, using VISA or MasterCard.
In April, a legal notice identifying property on which taxes have not been paid will be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the county. After that, the property can be legally sold at public auction to recoup any taxes, fees or assessments levied against it. “We’ve been very busy for the past couple of months but things have gone smoothly and we’ve been able to process payments without taxpayers having to stand in line for long periods of time,” Scott said. “We’re very fortunate to have employees who are cross-trained and are able to step in and help out during the busiest times.”
