Jan. 11, 1957-The Gospelaires Quartet featuring Bobby Cain entertained at the MCHS assembly this morning.
Jan. 11, 1957-Harold Orr, manager of industrial, personnel, and public relations for Wolverine Tube, is in Washington today attending a session of the labor relations committee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Jan. 12, 1957-The MCHS senior high basketball team posted another “W,” tonight beating Cotaco by a score of 41-34. Lothian Smallwood racked up the most points with 16. Others who added to the Tigers’ winning margin were Higdon, Channell, Ledbetter, Lindsey, and Maples. Cotaco employed a freezing strategy throughout the game but still lost.
Jan. 13, 1957-Dr. A. H. Reid, Baptist dignitary from Montgomery, was the featured speaker today as the new worship center for Hartselle First Baptist was dedicated. Tonight the Rev. D. C. Stringfellow, pastor, preached his last sermon in Hartselle prior to going to Texas for further theological study.
Jan. 14, 1957-Hartselle moviegoers were saddened to learn of the death today of one of their favorite actors, Humphrey Bogart, who succumbed to cancer at age 56.
Jan. 15, 1957-L. N. Whitman, who for the past year and a half has been taking things easy, started full-time at Peoples Drug Co. today. He originally entered the drug business in Moulton in 1907.
Jan.15, 1957-A party of four bagged their limit of 16 mallards in a cornfield near Priceville today-the last opportunity of this season. The hunters were Robert Wayne Clemons; his brother, Charles; his uncle, Tommy Clemons; and his father, Dyke Clemons.
Jan. 16, 1957-The barn of Homer Newman, who resides on south Railroad Street, burned this afternoon. The structure was a total loss. The fire also destroyed one sow, nine pigs, and most of Newman’s tractor implements. Due to an error, the fire alarm sounded eight times instead of two, which would have correctly designated the location of the fire.
Jan. 17, 1957-In observance of National Thrift Week, Professor W. A. Whetstone led a well-received panel discussion at MCTS.
Jan. 17, 1957-Joe Speake, a Hartselle resident who works for Southern Bell in Decatur, is currently being trained as a switchman in connection with the big dial system exchange being established in this area.
