Jan. 18, 1957-An impressive investiture ceremony was held last night for 14 girls who are now officially Brownie Scouts. Their leaders are Mrs. Cline Thompson, Mrs. Dan Dobbs, Mrs. John L. Cost and Mrs. Harding Speagle.
Jan. 18, 1957- Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Drake of Somerville are celebrating the birth of twin daughters at Hartselle Hospital a couple of days ago.
Jan. 19, 1957-Hartselle subscribers to the Birmingham morning newspaper, the Post-Herald, have been notified that the price of their subscription will increase from 45 to 50 cents per week.
Jan. 20, 1957-Block-Chandler Hospital is now accredited by the Alabama Hospital Association. This means that the new Hartselle health care facility will be accredited to service the Blue Cross-Blue Shield policies of its patients.
Jan. 21, 1957-The Hartselle Kiwanis Club has newly installed officers. Charlie Beene will serve as president. Others in leadership positions are Hugh F. Penn, Charles Rutledge, Arthur Smith, Jr., W. B. Allen, Horace Broom, Jimmie Davis, John Guier, Jr., Ray Baker, Bob Gilchrist, Ollie Camp and Jack Templeton.
Jan. 22, 1957-Recent estimates by state authorities are that bootlegging is a $50-million business in Alabama. Better quality moonshine is now bringing eight or nine dollars per bottle to distillers.
Jan. 23, 1957-The new federal interstate highway program should be in full swing this coming summer, according to State Highway Director Herman Nelson. One of the proposed major thoroughfares is expected to run east of Hartselle and will undoubtedly displace much traffic from Highway 31.
Jan. 24, 1957-The Morgan County Cancer Society’s education committee met tonight. Hartselle physician Dr. Fred Sherrill Jr., who is president of the local medical society, is a key member of this group.
Jan. 24, 1957-A group was selected tonight to explore the possibility of buying the Indian Hills golf course and clubhouse, using these facilities as the basis for establishing a new family-oriented country club.
Joe Wheeler EMC Manager Floyd Anderson, the only Hartselle member of the new groups, is taking a strong leadership role in this effort.
