Hartselle school officials have given up on being able to hold a special 12.5 mill property tax referendum in May and are now looking at doing it in October, according to Superintendent Dr. Mike Reid.
A local bill to authorize the election has been advertised and pre-filed in the state house, according to Rep. Ronald Grantland, D-Hartselle.
If voters approve the tax measure In October, property owners would see the increase reflected in their property tax statements in 2009.
The school system proposes to use the revenue to build a new Hartselle High School at an estimated cost of $25 to $30 million.
