The city of Hartselle will receive a $150,000 airport improvement grant this year to replace the runway lighting at Rountree Field Mayor Dwight Tankersley learned Monday from the Federal Aviation Agency.
Application for the grant was initially made in 2004 but was not approved. With city council approval, it was resubmitted in November 2006.
The project is included in the airport’s five-year capital improvement plan and is aimed at increasing the efficiency and safety of the airport’s operations, according to Tankersley.
The city is obligated to fund 5 percent of the project’s total costs, or $7,500. Of that amount, one-half, or $3,250, is eligible for reimbursement by Alabama Department of Transportation’s Aeronautics Bureau.
Two other airport grant applications are pending. The city has applied for a $150,000 grant to fund the installation of perimeter security fencing install and a $583,794 grant to fund the construction of 15 airplane hangars.
