Feb. 8, 1957-William Bradford Huie and Elia Kazan, well-known Hollywood producer (“A Streetcar Named Desire”) are currently touring sites that may be used in filming the movie version of “Mud on the Stars,” Mr. Huie’s first critically acclaimed novel. The author presently has six films pending based on his books or stories. “The Revolt of Mamie Stover” has sold more copies than any other contemporary novel except for Erskine Caldwell’s “God’s Little Acre.” Huie’s books have sold more than 5,000,000 copies and have been translated into 10 languages.”
Feb. 9, 1957-This is National Scout Week. In observance of it the local Troop 92 took over the Hartselle city government today. Acting as mayor was Arthur Knox and the police chief was Arthur Moore. One “drunk” was caught and jailed. Percy Hall pretended to be intoxicated but actually wasn’t.
Feb. 10, 1957-Like millions of American men everywhere, President Eisenhower is an avid hunter. Today he bagged three quail.
Feb. 11, 1957-The city is taking bids on street markers. The signs will be installed at the intersections of the streets, naming the street on which they stand. Also, the “Stop, Turn Right on Red” plan to expedite traffic at stoplight intersections is being expanded to all four downtown. A trial of the plan at the intersection of Main and Sparkman over the past five months has proved to be very successful.
Feb. 12, 1957-The annual American Legion-sponsored oratorical contest was held this morning. Bobby Cain was the county winner. Bobby has achieved many honors in public speaking during his brilliant high school career.
Feb. 12, 1957-A movie was shown at tonight’s meeting of the Kiwanis Club entitled “Lifeline to Freedom.” The film was produced to inform people behind the Iron Curtain about the free world.
Feb. 13, 1957-A Hartselle female teenager is now out on a $750 bond following her arrest for concealing stolen property. Apparently she was part of a gang of youths who have perpetrated a series of recent robberies, the latest at Minor’s jewelry store here.
Feb. 14, 1957-The world’s first public display of the LACROOSSE guided missile was the biggest attraction at today’s fourth anniversary celebration at Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal Guided Missile School.
Many Hartselle-based Arsenal employees and their families took the opportunity to see this exhibit related to what so many of them have been working on for such an extended period.
