Slaten earns degree from UA

Maegan Elizabeth Slaten of Somerville graduated from The University of Alabama in December 2006 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She graduated as a cum laude scholar.
Slaten was active in various organizations at the university. She was chosen to be an Avanti student orientation leader for the university in 2004 and 2005. This select group is responsible for hosting freshmen and transfer students in their transition to college. She has continued her work with students as a student assistant in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, an aerobics instructor at the university’s Student Recreation Center and a recruiting hostess for Alabama’s football program.
She has also been the assistant director of the University Creations Committee of the University Programs organization, the vice president of special events in the Student Alumni Association, the special events co-chair in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the assistant director of the Calvary Baptist Drama team. She has also been a member of various honoraries, including Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Gamma Phi Beta. She is also a member of the Student Alabama Education Association, National Education Association and Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society for educators.
Slaten was honored as a dean’s list and president’s list scholar for several semesters, as well as being chosen to be a part of “Who’s Who Among American College Students.” She was the 2004 recipient of the Jim and Ann Hayes Scholarship through the College of Education.
She is a 2003 graduate of Hartselle High School and the daughter of Ted and Vanessa Slaten of Somerville. She is the granddaughter of Jack and Lucy Winton, the late Rev. Charles Slaten and Kathryn Slaten and the great-granddaughter of Jane Winton, all of Somerville. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree at UA.
