Funeral for Jay Allen McDonald, 24, of Piney Grove was Sunday, March 11, at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Bros. Greg Standridge, Jeff Sherrell and Dan Compton officiating.
Burial was in Piney Grove Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. McDonald died Thursday, March 8, 2007, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Jan. 12, 1983, in Morgan County to James Ray McDonald and Kimberly Denise Smith McDonald. From the time he could walk he knew he wanted to rope. No matter what it took to achieve his dreams, he would do it. By the time he was 15 years old, he was already a darn good roper.
He went to school at West Point, all the while achieving his dreams of rodeo. He was a successful team roper and bronco rider. Jay rodeoed in high school winning in almost every rodeo he entered. He won champion team roper at Sipsey Arena in 2001, qualified for the 2205 PRCA rodeo finals, and became a very respected member of the rodeo community.
Jay was saved in 2002 and baptized at Friendship Baptist Church in 2003. He led a Christian life and was loved by all. He was married to Wendy Carroll McDonald in 2006. He is survived by his wife, Wendy Carroll McDonald of Piney Grove; his parents, Kimberly Denise and James Ray McDonald of Piney Grove; a brother, Justin Heath McDonald of Piney Grove; his grandparents, Johnny and Rosalie McDonald of Piney Grove, Doug and Sue Smith of Cullman and Dale and Marlene Belcher of Hartselle; and a great-grandmother, Opal Smith of Cullman. Pallbearers were Jason Lee, Josh Hudson, Matt Shedd, William Nicholson, Nate Moore, Chris Smalley, Cody Hampton and John Rodgers. Honorary pallbearers were Lindy Hampton, Eddie Crowe and Hoot Gibson.
