One Morgan County legislator is vowing to donate any pay increase to charity.
Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, said he will donate the proceeds from a potential legislative pay raise to Habitat for Humanity or other charities. Orr, who’s in his first term of office, previously worked for three years in Bangladesh establishing a Habitat program. He also served in the Peace Corps where he was assigned as a teacher in the remote Himalayan village of Khandbari, Nepal.
Last week legislators passed a resolution increasing pay from $30,710 to $49,500 annually.
The raise was the first for legislators since 1991.
The measure was passed on a voice vote, with no record of how individual legislators cast their ballot.
Gov. Bob Riley has vowed to veto the resolution but legislators said they have enough voted to override any veto.
