Members of the Hartselle Airport Board are investigating options of changing the name of Rountree Field to a more location-specific moniker.
Hartselle’s City Council has given its OK for the board to look to changing the name from Rountree Field to Hartselle/Morgan County Regional Airport. The council hasn’t approved the name change, however, saying they wanted to know more about how the airport received its original name.
In the 1960s, the airport was named for Asa Rountree, who as instrumental in getting grants for facility and was a member of the State Aeronautics Board and past chairman of the National Association of State Aviation Officials.
Rountree was also mayor of Hartselle.
Airport officials said they thought changing the name would give it more visibility to pilots and hopefully lead to additional funding.
