The relocation of military equipment to Hartselle’s Purple Heart Memorial is one step closer to reality but the display will probably have to be fenced, according to the city’s insurance carrier.
Mayor Dwight Tankersley said liability requirements will require the equipment - possibly a Vietnam-era helicopter, to be fenced in and not be a “hands-on” exhibit.
Purple Heart leaders want to locate the equipment at the memorial site at Sparkman Park.
The city has met with representatives of the Purple Heart veterans group several times about the plan. The Purple Heart members will pay the cost of relocating the equipment to Hartselle and cover all installation costs.
Officials were concerned about liability issues regarding locating the piece of equipment at a city park. According to the insurance carriers, the city won’t pay any additional premiums and won’t be responsible for damages or replacement.
Mann said he is in contact with the Department of the Army about supplying the equipment. He has requested a helicopter but could receive another item, such as a tank. The equipment will be on a concrete pad and will be elevated so it won’t able to be reached by the public.
The city and Purple Heart Memorial officials will sign a contract stipulating the details of the agreement. Mann said there is no timetable for the delivery.
