Students at Danville Elementary are reaching out to help a school devastated by last month’s tornadoes, while learning about similar storms that struck their community.
The students raised $1,000 for Hillcrest Elementary. Hillcrest was damaged in last month’s tornado in Enterprise, sustaining roof and water damage.
The drive was led by members of Danville’s student council.
The students, teachers and community members joined in the drive. The check was presented during a special ceremony at the school last week.
During the ceremony, the students also learned about tornadoes that hit their area in the 1960s and 1970s.
Robert Pope told the students the tornado that hit the community in the 1960s sounded like a train. He said it destroyed several houses and barns and killed six people.
Pat Payne told the students about another tornado that hit in 1974, advising them to always pay attention to weather watches and warnings.
