Single mom credits support system for success

The world came crashing down on Lynnette Brown of Somerville five years ago when her marriage ended in divorce. Suddenly, she was a single mom facing huge responsibilities for which she was not prepared. Not the least of them was three children to raise.
She reached a compromise by taking a job as a radio show disc jockey with Rocket City Broadcasting in Huntsville. On Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. she plays nothing but Southern soul and blues on WLOR Radio, Jammin 1550 AM.
Her popularity as a DJ was recognized on a national level recently when she was invited by Big Sky Productions of Hollywood, Calif. to attend the premiere showing of “What Love Is,” a comedy written and directed by Mars Callahan and starring Cuba Gooding Jr. The movie’s soundtrack includes Southern soul music.
Brown’s room at the Sportsman’s Lodge Hotel in Studio City, near Universal Studios, was free but her plane fare and other expenses were not. To defray their cost, she received donations from some of the sponsors of her radio show and other local businesses.
She said her goal is to have the first syndicated Southern soul/talk radio show.
Brown credited her family, friends, fellow employees and sponsors with playing a big role in her success as a communicator and single mom.
Brown said she wants her life to be a good example to single mothers who are struggling to build a career and taking good care of their families at the same time.
Brown is a graduate of Drake Technical College in Huntsville and operated a beauty salon
in Priceville before pursuing a career in radio and television communications. Her three children attend schools in Priceville. They are Brianna, 16, Crestan, 15, and Malik, 11.
