April 12, 1957-A teen with a loaded rifle caused a panic at O. W. Hogan’s store in Lacon today. The youth had originally gone into the store, bought a box of shells from Mr. Hogan, and then proceeded to feed them into the magazine of his rifle despite a request not to do so in the store. When the young man continued to behave in a hostile manner he was disarmed and taken to the county jail.
April 13, 1957-The average hourly wage of a non-agricultural worker in Alabama is now $1.73, a record.
April 14, 1957-Airman 2/C Ralph Pattillo, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Pattillo, successfully completed his flight training at Graham AFB, Fla., and is now posted at Greenville, Miss.
April 14, 1957-The Morgan County Singing Convention was held at Cotaco High School today. Cullie Gibson served as chairman of the convention. Song directors included Jack Miller, Acie Hightower, Mrs. Ralph Brown, E. H. Minor, Tennis Sparkman, Guy Walker, Plumer Oden, Bill Stewart, Vivian Summerford, Vernon Sharp, Fred Summerford, Annie Jo Holmes, Peggy Long, Malcolm Stephenson, Don Key, Homer Woodard, Paul Jones, and Marie Moon.
April 15, 1957-Hartselle procrastinators dutifully filed their federal and state tax returns shortly before midnight tonight.
April 15, 1957-The Kiwanis Club of Hartselle is the undisputed basketball champion now after they socked an almost defenseless Rotary team by a whopping 45-24 margin. High scorer for the winners was Scotty Stone who racked for 19 points. Following him was James Stephenson with 13 markers and Robert Stephenson with nine points.
April 16, 1957-Hartselle defeated Trinity here this afternoon 17-3, amassing 15 hits to only four for the visiting team. The Tigers’ starting pitcher, Kenneth Conner, struck out ten, gave up only two hits and walked nobody.
April 17, 1957-MCHS winners in the annual “What Industry Means to Alabama” essay contest are Janice Grant, Martha Lynn Roberts, Carolyn McCutcheon, and Ann Hoffhaus. Their school sponsors are Lizzie Reed Penn and Beulah Hester. The contest is sponsored by Associated Industries of Alabama.
April 18, 1957-A local grocery store is offering two cartons of Coca-Colas for 49 Cents.
April 18, 1957-Tonight and tomorrow night the Ranch Drive-in Theatre is screening “Love Me Tender” with Richard Egan and Debra Paget and introducing Elvis Presley.
