Local woman takes on accessibility issues

A Hartselle woman is taking it on herself to improve handicapped accessibility throughout the city.
Sharron Brown, who uses a motorized wheelchair, said since she moved to the city last summer she’s found numerous places that aren’t able to accommodate her chair.
Brown pointed out a common problem during a recent visit to the Enquirer. The front door has guard rails that prevent someone in a wheelchair from accessing the door via the ramp. The side door, which is handicapped accessible, is not marked.
Another problem is sidewalks.
Brown said she likes to be active and is often forced to use the street for her chair because the sidewalks either don’t have ramps or are in bad repair. She’s taking it on herself to visit different areas of the city this summer and track the areas where there are accessibility issues with the sidewalks.
