Only a dad would eat mushroom glue

There’s nothing like becoming a parent to make you thankful for your own raising. Looking back, I’m amazed how my parents were able to juggle jobs, kids and all our activities and life in general.
I am one of the fortunate ones to have good parents. My mom and dad were always supportive, or at least made a good show of acting like they were watching me when I put on yet another
I’m sure this wasn’t fun for either of them. I’m sure it was especially difficult for my dad, who grew up with loads of brothers but only one sister. That’s sort of like Greg, who grew up with two brothers and later, had a son. I’m sure the world of girls was and is a mystery to them both.
Not likely, though I’m sure my dad thought the same thing. Instead, he got me, and was therefore drug to thousands of dance recitals where he sat for hours watching little girls in pink tu-tus spin around the stage.
Somehow, my dad managed to make it through, though years later I learned he had dozed off through the parts where I wasn’t on stage.
I think that’s pretty understandable.
Still, my dad managed to navigate the daughter world OK. He and my brother were involved in sports, so maybe that was his testosterone outlet.
Dads and daughters do have a special relationship. I learned early on who I needed to hit up for something, or who to run to if I had really screwed up. Maybe it was a preemptive strike or maybe I just knew my mom had some sort of mother-radar that didn’t involve any sort of sympathy for that bad grade.
Or maybe I knew my dad was willing to put up with a lot. I learned that the time I decided to cook something for him. I was about seven and I mixed two cans of soup – no telling what kind – and then, in an effort to make them thick like gravy – I put flour in the mixture. I then took this goopy mess and poured, or rather scraped, it on top of some leftover rice. Due to the fact I couldn’t use the stove, I served my meal cold. Proud of my efforts, I brought it to my dad who actually ate some of it, or at least did a really good job of acting like he did.
In spite of ingesting cream of mushroom glue, he managed to smile and say how good it was and how he would eat more but he sure was full.
Now that’s a good dad.
