July 5, 1957-Four Morgan County men left today for induction into the U.S. Army at Montgomery. One of the group is William Alvis King, Rock St., Hartselle.
July 6, 1957-Several Morgan County High School seniors have made their college choice. Ann Hoffhaus, Joyce Payne, Curly Burns, Eleanor Roberts, Jimmy Edwards, and Karl Estes plan to go to Auburn. Bill Stewart, Joy Sue Gibson, Billy Lindsey, Bobby Cain, and Marilyn Bentley will enroll at Bama. Other selections include Judson, Patty Jane Montgomery; FSTC, Jan Ward, Norris Turney, Sylvia Adcock, Dorothy Cox, Janice Grant and Maxine Newton; Huntingdon, Martha Lynn Roberts and Ellen Allen; and David Lipscomb, Betty Wagnon and Marilyn Pettit.
July 7, 1957-A record turnout of 10,000 persons was expected for the third annual Courtland sports car races today.
The Decatur and Moulton Jaycees sponsor the races and the admission fee is $1. There were more than 6,000 race spectators last year.
July 8, 1957-Larry Roberts and Bervel Bennett boarded a northbound train today. They will participate in the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge, Pa.
July 9, 1957-A Japanese scientist has taken sharp issue with prominent New Orleans physician Dr. Alton Ochsner who contends that heavy cigarette smoking is a prime cause of lung cancer. Dr. Ochsner had told a forum of 300 U.S. military and Japanese doctors he had never seen a lung cancer patient who was not a heavy smoker. However, Dr. Komei Nakayama responded that, "Most Japanese I know smoke their heads off, and they don't get lung cancer."
July 10, 1957-Several local teens and their dates drove to the Starvue Drive-in west of Decatur tonight to see a double feature-"The Werewolf" and "Earth vs. Flying Saucers." Closer to home, the Bowline was featuring "Untamed Youth"-about "kids turned rock-n-roll wild-and the 'house of correction' that makes 'em wilder."
July 11,1957-Author William Bradford Huie is currently constructing a residence valued at $20,000 on Barkley Street. His contractor is Ray Childs of Decatur. A permit has been issued to John Montgomery, 536 Short Street, to build one room and a double garage valued at approximately $2,500.
