Two teams from the Decatur Junior Tennis League competed in the 2007 Junior Team Tennis State Championships at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn July 13-15.
Brandon McNutt and Anthony Penick, members of the 14-and-under and 18-and-under boys teams, respectively, were recognized as Sportsmanship Award recipients. Both are from Hartselle. The awards go to the players who receive the most votes from the competitors in their age divisions.
Other team members are listed as follows: 14-and-under girls – Jenie Abercrombie and Anna Harrison, both of Hartselle, and Jordan Wagner, Ivey-Katherine Weaver, Madelyn Denton and Makinley Baird, all of Decatur; boys – Kyle St Armand of Hartselle and Matt Lawrence of Decatur; 18-and-under girls – Candice Light, Shelley Scarbrough and Katie Kilgore, all of Hartselle and Haley Smith of Priceville; boys – Patrick Connell and AJ McNutt, both of Hartselle.
Both teams finished third in their respective age divisions.
The 14-and-under team is coached by Danny and Regina Light. Pam Abercrombie is an assistant coach. The Lights also coach the 18-and-under team. Rhonda Wagner is the National Junior Tennis League director for the Decatur League.
The tennis players competed locally for six weeks with the first place winners advancing to the state championships.
"Players in both age divisions worked hard in league play and represented Morgan County very well in state competition," coach Danny Light said.
