Funeral for Harold Wayland McLemore Sr., 75, of Decatur was Saturday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dusty McLemore officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mr. McLemore died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, at his residence. He was a 1950 graduate of Riverside High School (Decatur High) and played football under the late Coach Shorty Ogle from 1948 to 1950. He was a member of a Decatur High state championship team along with his best friend, the late Wes Thompson. They also served together in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He enlisted in 1950 as a member of the U.S. Army 1343rd Combat Engineering Company and became a corporal and a communications specialist. He was deployed to Korea at the beginning of the war and his division landed at Hyundai Beach under heavy enemy attack. He was later wounded and spent three months recovering in a MASH unit. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal and two bronze campaign stars. He was a member of the Decatur Chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Upon returning to the states, he was employed with Decatur Electric Department as a lineman and later became superintendent. He retired in 1991. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine McLemore of Decatur; two sons, Harold Wayland McLemore Jr. of Carthage, Tex. and Warren Hayes McLemore of Somerville; and four grandchildren, Casey McLemore Jill McLemore and Shane McLemore, all of Carthage, Tex. and Brandon McLemore of Somerville.
