Terrell Industries of Hartselle is now a safer, more efficient workplace thanks to Morgan County United Way's "Day of Caring" and the generosity of Solutia employees.
A team of 30 Solutia employees spent Tuesday, Sept. 11, installing metal pallet racks in Terrell's warehouse and shelving in the production area as their "Day of Caring" project. Similar projects were conducted at other UW participating agencies by volunteer teams.
Project coordinator Darlene Haddock said Solutia's United Way Committee didn't hesitate to choose Terrell when it looked over a list of potential projects provided by the Volunteer Center of Morgan County.
"I have to admit that I have a soft spot in my heart for Terrell because I have a daughter who graduated from there," she said. "We were also fortunate to have Toray Fibers donate some pallet racks for the project.
"It's amazing how everyone we asked was winning to help. It was no problem getting volunteers."
As a part of the project a pizza lunch was provided for Terrell's 67 employees and the UW volunteers.
Terrell manager Linda Pitts was overjoyed with the results of the Day of Caring project.
"The new shelving will enable us to get the small parts up off the floor, open up more work space and eliminate the time it takes to go to the warehouse to get the parts we need," she said.
"Some of the dads of our employees were able to install one section of pallet racks in the warehouse some time ago but we didn't have the money needed to hire the remainder of the work done," she added. "This is very beneficial to Terrell. It will make our workplace safer and expedite production at the same time.
The 2007 United Way fundraising campaign was launched at a kick-off breakfast at Solutia's picnic grounds on Sept. 11. The goal is $1.7 million. Decatur Attorney John Sedlak is chairman.
