Participants sought for intern program

Applications are now being accepted from college juniors, seniors and graduate students who are interested in working as government interns during the 2008 regular legislative session, according to State Sen. Arthur Orr.
"The legislative internship program allows college students to be part of the political process in Montgomery and gives them the opportunity to help shape the direction in which our state will travel," Orr said. "Legislative interns can help draft bills, conduct important research and take responsibility for tasks that are essential to the lawmaking process."
The Capital Intern Program, which is directed by the Alabama Law Institute, places qualified students in positions in various government offices, including the offices of the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and attorney general. In addition, some students are assigned roles in the Alabama State Senate and House of Representatives.
Participation in the program lasts just over four months and pays a one-time stipend of $3,600 in order to help defray expenses. Students must be Alabama residents or attend a college or university in Alabama in order to qualify.
