A one-vehicle accident on a rural road three miles north of Somerville claimed the life of a Somerville teenager on Saturday afternoon.
Gregory Roman Jr., 14, of Somerville sustained fatal injuries when the car in which he was a passenger wrecked at 693 Joe Lemmond Road, three miles north of Somerville, Saturday, Sept. 22, at 4:45 p.m., according to State Troopers. Medflight transported him to Huntsville Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Roman was a well-liked freshman at Priceville High School. He was a varsity football player who wore number 86 on his jersey. He played tight end on offense and linebacker on defense.
He was a member of the JROTC program and on the A-B honor roll.
The driver of the car was identified as Justin West, 16, of Somerville, one of Roman's close friends. He was transported to Decatur General Hospital where he was treated and released. They were riding in a 1995 model Saturn. Neither one was wearing a seat belt.
A fund has been set up in Roman's memory at Family Security Credit Union. Donations may also be made at Priceville Elementary or Priceville High School.
The family asks that donations be made to the memorial fund in lieu of flowers.
