The annual magazine subscription drive at Hartselle Junior High School is under way. The fundraiser kicked off Sept. 28 and will continue through Oct. 15.
Students and faculty members are taking orders for both new and renewal subscriptions to more than 1,000 magazines. They range from well-known popular names such as Reader's Digest, Time and Newsweek to less popular titles such as Log Home Living, Men in Nursing and Snow Goer.
"We want people to know this is the only fundraiser the school has during the year," Librarian Beth Rabb said. "We get to keep 40 percent of the gross sales and this money is used to purchase school supplies and equipment that is not budgeted through the central office. Its success is very important to our students."
Last year the project raised about $30,000.
Students are asked not to solicit subscription sales on a door-to-door basis but are encouraged to seek orders from family members, neighbors and friends.
"If you would like to help the school by subscribing to a magazine of your choice or renewing the subscription of one you're already receiving but haven't been contracted by one of our students, call us at 773-6094 and we'll get a magazine catalog and order form to you immediately," Kaye Clemons, project coordinator, said. "Many of the magazine companies are offering discounted rates and any other special offers or coupons they are offering will be accepted."
Subscriptions may also be purchased online by visiting QSP.com and clicking on the "Shop Now" button, with the school receiving credit.
A variety of prizes are being offered to students who sell subscriptions to certain magazines or the largest number. The prizes include mini slide phones and I-POD shaped radios.
The top seller in each grade will receive his or her choice of a MP3 player or a projection alarm clock. Students who sell 10 or more subscriptions will receive a free lunch at Pizza Hut.
