Property taxes mailed Sept. 28
By Staff
Property tax notices were mailed last week and were due by Oct. 1 and delinquent by Dec. 31.
According to Revenue Commissioner Amanda Scott, tax bills have a new look this year. The property owner is given additional information, the bills are more user-friendly and a return envelope is included.
The new tax bill will also speed up the process in the Revenue Commissioner's office and will reduce waiting time in line. Tax payer checks are scanned and totaled automatically which will improve accuracy in the office.
The age exemption form has also been revamped to include a larger font which will be easier to read.
"We have tried to simplify the form to make it easier to complete. We solicited input from local accountants who prepare these forms to assist us in making it more user-friendly," Scott said.
Age exemptions are available when a taxpayer reaches age 65 and there is a reduction in property taxes on the homestead property. Other exemptions are available based on federal and state income tax returns. Call the Revenue Commissioner's office for more information on age and income exemptions.
Taxes may be paid in person at either the Morgan County Courthouse in Decatur or the Hartselle office located in Crestwood Shopping Center. Office hours are Monday thru Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Taxpayers may also pay online at co.morgan.al.us with Visa and MasterCard.
