President Harry S. Truman often used the saying "The Buck Stops Here," and it's his story that young newspaper readers will discover in the serial, "A Familiar Face." The eight-week series kicks off next week in the Hartselle Enquirer.
The story is part of the Enquirer's celebration of National Newspaper Week, Oct. 7-13.
In the story, a young boy is assigned a research paper and learns the role Truman had as an adult in international decisions of humanitarian aid, war and racial equality. Scotty Brown takes from the lesson a new appreciation for the top job in America and the realization that even he could someday be president.
The first chapter will publish in the Oct. 11 issue of the Enquirer. The remaining chapters will be published the next seven weeks.
Through the Enquirer's NIE (Newspapers in Education) program, several area classrooms receive free copies of the newspaper. The newspapers are used in a variety of classroom activities. This serialized feature will promote reading through a variety of activities relating to the tale. Also, during its publication, educators will have access to a free teacher's guide relating to the stories. It can be downloaded at www.hartselleenquirer.com and reproduced as needed.
The Enquirer provides newspapers to schools at a heavily discounted rate. Sponsorships are always needed to support the program. If you'd like to sponsor a class or a group, call 773-6566.
