Danville, Hartselle advance to sub-state round

Danville finished in second place at the Region D Tournament in Elkmont Saturday and will host a sub-state match tonight against Geraldine at 6 p.m.
At the regional tournament, the Lady Hawks were eliminated in the championship match by Lexington, who also eliminated Danville at the Elite Eight in 2006. Danville fell by the score of 25-22, 25-18, 25-17.
In earlier matches at the tournament, Danville defeated Lauderdale County 25-20, 26-24, 25-11 and Colbert Heights 25-20, 18-25, 25-21, 25-14.
Alaina Fitzgerald had a team-high 44 kills for the Lady Hawks, followed by Lindsay Simmons with 39 and Jordan Spinks with 33. Lacey Evans led with 44 digs and Kirby Wallace had a team-best 15 aces.
Simmons led with nine blocks while Fitzgerald was the team leader with 49 assists. Kimberly Lindsey added 39 assists.
Hartselle (42-23) also advanced to the sub-state round after the Lady Tigers finished in third place at the Region D Tournament in Scottsboro Saturday.
Hartselle defeated Scottsboro in the consolation final match, 25-17, 25-6, 22-25, 25-14. Hartselle opened with a win over Lee-Huntsville before losing to Arab.
Chandler Orr led with 32 kills, followed by Dana Lacey with 24. Cerra Little had 46 assists and Shauna Clemons had a team-high five aces and 56 digs. Clemons and Lacey were both named to the All-Regional team.
The Lady Tigers will travel to Gardendale for a best-of-five sub-state match tonight. The match begins at 6 p.m. at Bragg Middle School.
Falkville, Priceville and Brewer also competed in regional tournaments but did not advance to sub-state.
