Falkville resident looks back on 102 years

Living to a ripe old age of 102 and being able to sit around and talk about it is quite an accomplishment even in today's world of medical miracles and high-speed technology.
Flossie Holmes is such a person. She celebrated her 102nd birthday Oct. 23, in the company of family members, friends and fellow residents at Falkville Health and Rehab Center, where she has lived for the past 13 months.
Mrs. Holmes was born and raised in Eva as the fifth child in a family of eight children. Her mother died when she was nine and she was left to help take care of three younger siblings. Her father, Walter Ford, was a farmer and Eva's first rural mail carrier. She recalls that he had one of the first three automobiles in the community, a 1914 Metz.
She was married to Omer Holmes, a farmer and logger, for more than 65 years, from 1924 until 1989. They lived on a farm in the Greasy Cove community throughout their marriage and she remained there until she suffered a stroke a month after her 100th birthday. They had a son, No
