UDC gathers for convention

The Alabama Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy held its 112th annual Convention on Oct. 4-6, 2007 at the Holiday Inn, downtown in Huntsville.
This year's hosts Chapters were: Bankhead, General John H. Forney and Joe Wheeler.
Members attended from across the state.
Joe Wheeler No. 291 of Decatur was hostess of the Magazine Luncheon held on Friday, Oct. 5, with Kay McCarley presiding as Magazine Chairman. The theme for the luncheon was honoring our Southern Women ancestors. Decorations included 85 photographs donated by members from across the state. The Chapter helped with the President's Tea later that afternoon.
Members of Joe Wheeler Chapter attending the event included: Glendora James, Kay McCarley, Rita Birdsong, Judy Blackwell, Betty Dupuy, Kathy Jones, Linda Edwards, Joyce Shumate, Mavis Kimbrell, Bettye Moore, Betty Lovvorn, Sarah Gray and guest Jim Gray. Mrs. Moore served as Marshall of the Pages and Mrs. Kimbrell served as a Page.
A Memorial Service was held on Friday to honor all Daughters who passed away during the past year, two of which were Joe Wheeler No. 291 members, Christine Vinson and Mildred Compton Matthews. White carnations were place on a wreath in the Daughters honor and placed at the Confederate Monument at the Courthouse.
A historical evening held on Saturday night concluded the Convention with the presentation of two WWII Cross of Military Service Awards, one Korean Conflict National Defense Medal and one Meritorious Service Award presented by President Lorraine Ennis and Recorder of Crosses of Military Service Sue Stealreath.
