Brewer High School’s Patriots fell to the Arab Knights 17-0 in a hard-fought battle on the road Friday night. The loss ended the Patriots’ season at 3-7 while the Knights improved their record to 2-8.
Hard-nosed defensive play by both teams dominated the game for more than three quarters. The first quarter was scoreless. Arab got on the scoreboard with 4:11 left in the second period on a 43-yard field goal by Trey Knighton. There was no score in the third period.
The host team took advantage of a partially blocked punt to go up 10-0 with 9:59left in final period and scored again with 2:27 left in the game thanks to three Brewer penalties totaling 32 yards.
The Knights marched 44 yards in 13 plays on their second possession and took a 3-0 lead on Knighton’s 43-yard field goal.
It appeared that the Patriots would return the favor on their second possession. They drove 60 yards in 11 plays and had the ball on the Knights’ 5-yard line with 4.1 second left in the half. The chances are they could’ve made a field goal and tied the score; however, they opted to go for a touchdown and the lead. Anthony Dickerson rolled right and threw back to his left toward Matthew Pinkerton who had a couple of steps on a defender in the end zone. The ball was slightly overthrown and landed a few feet in front of Pinkerton.
The Knights increased their lead to 10-0 with 9:15 left in the final period after they blocked a Brewer punt and gained possession 24 yards from the end zone. Jon King scored on a 5-yard run to cap a three-play drive.
Their final touchdown came with 2:27 left in the game on a 13-yard run by Sam Maze. Knighton added the extra point to make the score 17-0.
The Patriots helped the Knights on the drive as they committed three penalties and gave up 32 yards in a 43-yard drive.
Chris Dickerson paced the Brewer’s running attack by gaining 79 yards on 18 carries. Quarterbacks Anthony Dickerson and Tyler Parker combined to complete 12 of 24 passes for 156 yards.
King led the Knights’ running attack with 104 yards on 23 carries.
