The Salvation Army needs bell ringers to work in the Red Kettle Drive in Hartselle and Decatur.
Volunteers to help with the kettle drive are needed more this year than ever before,” said Valerie Coan, kettle drive coordinator. “That’s because we lost federal funding for our Homeless Prevention, Emergency Shelter and Transition Living programs. We hope the loss is only temporary but in the meantime we’ll have to rely on the donations we receive in the kettles to keep this programs going.”
The Salvation Army will kick off its kettle drive Nov. 16 at Wal-Mart and Krogers in Hartselle and 11 different locations in Decatur. Bell ringers will be on duty from 9 a. m. to 8 p. m., Monday through Saturday. Limestone and Lawrence counties are included in the Salvation Army’s Decatur District.
If you’re interested in serving as a bell ringer, you are urged to call Coan at 256-353-2822 or email her at Valerie_coan@usg.salvation army.org.
The Salvation Army will launch its Angel Christmas Tree Drive on the same date. One of the angel trees will be set up at Wal-Mart in Hartselle. It will be decorated with angel cards, listing age, sex and clothing sizes of children under 13 who have been approved as gift recipients.
In addition, boxes of staple foods and fruit will be distributed to needy families during the holiday period.
Friday, Nov. 9, at noon is the deadline for families to register for assistance. Last year, the Decatur District provided food for 1,200 families and gifts to 1,900 children.
