Lady Hawks tie for 3rd in Class 3A

PELHAM — For the second straight season, the Danville volleyball team finished tied for third place in Class 3A after falling in the semifinals at the Elite Eight in Pelham Oct. 31.
No. 8 Danville was eliminated by No. 3 Madison Academy in the semifinal match, 25-17, 25-23, 25-14. Earlier, the Lady Hawks knocked off Montevallo in the first round, 25-21, 27-25, 25-18.
Against Montevallo, Danville had some difficulty in Game 2 as the Lady Bulldogs came back from a 21-14 deficit to tie the game at 25-25. But the Lady Hawks persevered with the last two points and took a hard-fought 27-25 win.
Alaina Fitzgerald, the only senior on the Lady Hawks this season, led the way with 20 kills, 15 assists, three blocks and two aces against Montevallo. Fitzgerald was also a part of two previous Danville teams who advanced to the Elite Eight.
Lindsay Simmons finished with 12 kills and Lacey Evans had 25 digs against the Lady Bulldogs.
Against Madison Academy, Jordan Spinks led the Lady Hawks with 15 kills. Fitzgerald added 10 kills and 15 assists and Evans led with 16 assists.
Danville’s record finished at 42-28. Madison Academy eventually lost to Lexington in three games in the Class 3A championship match.
