Hartselle and Brewer finished with just one win each in the three-day Hartselle Sporting Goods House Special tournament last week, but both teams came away with plenty of game experience to build on this season.
Hartselle opened the tournament with an impressive win over Athens, but closed out the tournament with losses to Lawrence County, Decatur Heritage and Hazel Green.
Hazel Green won the tournament after going unbeaten over the three days.
'd2I felt like we were competitive in the tournament and that was a good thing,'d3 said Hartselle head coach Johnny Berry. 'd2I was disappointed with our game against Lawrence County, but we came back and played toe-to-toe with Hazel Green, a team that will probably win their area. We battled with them to the very end and that'd5s what we want to see right now.
'd2We had a chance to win every game we were in, but we just couldn'd5t close the deal. But we'd5re working on getting better and I think we'd5re doing that. Our goal is to be a much better team by February.'d3
Sam Fleishman scored a team-high 43 points for the Tigers in the tournament. Alex Brown and Jeremy Roper both finished with 41 points in four games, while Rodney Stansberry had 37 points.
Brewer finished 1-3 in the tournament despite playing in some tight games. Three of the losses came by three points or less, including a 74-71 overtime loss to Athens.
'd2I thought we played some good competition and that'd5s really what'd5s important for us,'d3 Brown said. 'd2We didn'd5t win them all, but the losses we had some very competitive games. We lost one in overtime and we lost another one by one.'d3
The Patriots opened with a 58-47 loss to Albertville Wednesday before dropping a pair of three-point games Friday to Hazel Green and Athens.
Cody Lanford finished with a team-high 46 points in the tournament for Brewer, while Josh Adams added 43 points.
'd2We got good play out of our point guards 'd0 Josh Adams, Preston Hackett and Kohl Sowder 'd0 in all the games,'d3 Brown said. 'd2We like to try to roll about 10 guys in and out of the lineup to see if we can wear out our opponents in the second half.'d3
Hartselle 58, Athens 47
Hartselle limited Athens to just four fourth-quarter points to take a 58-47 victory in the first round of the tournament.
The Tigers went on a 15-4 run over the final eight minutes to post the win.
Rodney Stansberry and Jeremy Roper both finished with 15 points for Hartselle. Alex Brown added 11 points and Manquez Jones chipped in nine points.
Hartselle hit 21-of-43 shots from the field to get past Athens. Stansberry made 7-of-11 shots to pace the Tigers.
Rich'd5ard Nasseri and Trey Brooks had 14 points each for Athens.
LCHS 70, Hartselle 58
Hartselle had trouble stopping Lawrence County'd5s Myles King, who finished with a game-high 28 points in the Red Devils win over the Tigers.
Sam Fleischman led Hartselle with 13 points, while Alex Brown chipped in with 10 points in the loss.
Lawrence County led by four points at the half, but the Red Devils pulled away with a strong run in the third quarter.
The Red Devils outscored Hartselle 39-31 in the second half.
Hazel Green 74, Brewer 71
Hazel Green stayed unbeaten by rallying to beat Brewer in overtime Friday morning.
The Trojans outscored the Patriots 13-10 in overtime to get the win.
Darrius Campbell scored 15 points in the Patriots'd5 loss to Hazel Green.
Cody Lanford added 12 points and Houston Lanford finished with 10 points for the Patriots.
Kyle Burnell scored a game-high 23 points for Hazel Green.
Albertville 58, Brewer 47
Cody Lanford led the Patriots with 14 points, while Josh Adams and Houston Lanford each added nine points in the loss.
The Patriots scored just three points in the third quarter as Albertville extended an 11-point halftime lead to 42-22 going into the final quarter.
Brewer struggled from the field, hitting just 18 of its 49 shots. The Patriots were 5-of-26 from the 3-point line.
Chris Dickerson had a team-high eight rebounds for Brewer.
Levi Stephens scored 13 to pace Albertville.
Brewer 69, Athens 66
Brewer jumped out to a 17-point lead in the first half against Athens, then held off a late challenge to pick up their second win of the season.
Kohl Sowder led Brewer with 15 points and Josh Adams added 14 in the loss.
Cody Lanford chipped in with 11 points for the Patriots.
Athens closed to within one at the half, trailing Brewer 38-37. But the Patriots held off the challenge to pick up with win with a 31-point second half.
Heritage 44, Hartselle 42
Decatur Heritage edged Hartselle 44-42 Friday night to keep its title hopes alive.
Decatur Heritage'd5s De'd5el Watkins scored 11 points. Austin Gil added 10 in the win.
Hartselle'd5s Sam Fleischman scored 12 points for Hartselle, while Brown had 10.
The game was tied at 40-40 at the end of regulation, but Decatur Heritage was able to come up with two key baskets in overtime to seal the victory.
LCHS 91, Brewer 90
After trailing by as much as 12 points in the first half, Brewer scored 53 points in the second half to come within a bucket of getting the comeback win.
The Patriots climbed back into the game with some strong outside shooting, especially from the 3-point line.
Brewer finished 12-of-38 from the 3-point line in the loss with Brandon Murray hitting all three of his attempts.
Preston Hackett scored 21 points as Brewer made a late run against Lawrence County that came up just short.
Josh Adams scored 13 points and had six assists, while Murray finished with 12 points for the Patriots.
Lawrence County'd5s Myles King led all scorers with 30 points.
Hazel Green 54, Hartselle 49
Hazel Green wrapped up the team title with a five-point win over Hartselle Saturday afternoon.
Kyle Burwell scored 24 points to lead the Trojans to the win.
Hartselle'd5s Rodney Stansberry finished with 12 points and four rebounds in the win. Alex Brown and Jeremy Roper each added 10 points in the loss.
Hazel Green led 26-22 at the half.
