Hartselle’s school system will rely on another company to audit its financial records for the next three years.
The School Board voted unanimously at a regular meeting Nov. 19 to employ the NBA Professional Group of Huntsville as auditor for 2007-08 at a cost of $30,400, 2008-09, $33,500 and 2009-2010, $35,950.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed said the company’s proposal was $633 less that the next lowest offer.
The move comes after city officials suggested last year that the school system change auditors. It also breaks a long-term relationship with the Decatur auditing firm of Wear, Howell, Strickland, Quinn and Law.
In another matter, the board voted 3-2 to employ Jan Byrd as administrative assistant to the superintendent and central office manager, effective Nov. 26. She is currently serving as office manager at Hartselle Junior High School.
Approval of her appointment was not contested; however, two board members, Cathy White Goodwin and Jeff Gray, preferred to make the change effective Jan. 1, 2008.
Reed recommended the earlier effective date out of concern for making the transition in the central office while Maxine Sanford is still on the job. She will be retiring from the position early next year.
Pouncey said he would prefer that the change not take place until the first of next year but said he would do whatever he was asked to do.
It was agreed after the vote that Byrd would devote part-time to her duties at the junior high until the first of the year.
The board acted on other personnel matters as follows:
