Citizens of foreign countries who find themselves arrested in Hartselle will now have their name sent to their home country’s consular’s office and have their name entered into the National Crime Information Center to find out if they are wanted outside the US.
Hartselle Police Chief Ron Puckett said the policy has been in place for about two months.
Under the terms of the policy, the State Department’s Consular Office will be notified when a foreign national is detained. The person’s name and data will then be entered into the National Crime Information Center. That information will be reported to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Puckett said the policy focuses on identifying criminal aliens who are wanted in other jurisdictions. If an alien is found to be wanted in jurisdictions outside the US, they will be placed under an order of removal before they are released from city jail.
