With just two weeks remaining before teams break for holiday tournaments, several local programs are already looking to the playoffs.
The Brewer girls are off to a tremendous start to the season, winning nine of their first 10 games.
In the first poll of the season, Brewer was ranked ninth in Class 5A, but they should make a move up at least a few spots in the next poll.
The Lady Patriots have been dominating early in the season and have posted some impressive numbers.
Brewer dropped its first game of the season Saturday night at Class 6A Florence, but the Lady Patriots should still be a threat to make a run at a state championship.
The loss to the Falcons came on the heels of an emotional win over sixth-ranked Hartselle Friday night.
Brewer’s next big test will come in the DAR tournament right before Christmas. The tournament traditionally features several of the top girls’ programs in the northern half of the state.
Despite falling to Brewer last week, Hartselle’s girls should have a solid run ahead once the second half of the season rolls around.
Hartselle’s girls have opened the season with a 5-5 start, but the Lady Tigers certainly haven’t tried to avoid a loaded schedule early.
The Lady Tigers played in the Russellville tournament during the Thanksgiving break and suffered several tough losses to top competition, including a one-point loss to three-time Class 1A state finalist Hazlewood.
Danville has been flying under the radar, but as the Lady Hawks gain some valuable experience they’ll be a threat to make a run in the playoffs.
The Lady Hawks’ Alaina Fitzgerald certainly is no newcomer. But Danville has had some younger players step up in recent weeks to give Fitzgerald some help on both ends of the court.
Danville should come through area play unbeaten and would be a strong favorite to reach the regionals.
Priceville lost to Lawrence County and now has a 1-1 area mark, but the Lady Bulldogs still hope to make a run at a playoff spot in Class 4A.
Falkville has an experienced lineup and the Lady Blue Devils could get on a roll after the break.
Falkville has faced some tough opponents and that will help down the stretch.
