Dec. 13, 1957-Several ardent Democrats from this area were in Birmingham tonight for a $25 a plate Young Democrats of Alabama banquet at the Tutwiler Hotel. Senator Lister Hill was the featured speaker.
Dec. 13, 1957-Robert G. (Bob) Parker, 81, died at his home on Falkville 1 today. The funeral will be Sunday at Union Hill Church near Eva. Mr. Parker’s survivors include a son, Grady, a long-time resident of Hartselle.
Dec. 14, 1957-Martha Stewart, a senior at MCHS and the daughter of Mrs. S. E. Stewart Jr., has been elected “good citizenship girl” for 1957-58 by a vote of the faculty and her classmates. This prestigious award is given by DAR.
Dec. 15, 1957-Once-powerful Alabama and Auburn, owner of the national championship trophy, today were setting the pace in football recruiting for SEC schools. Alabama, with high hopes of a return to power under the guidance of new head coach Bear Bryant, had signed 40 high school stars to grants-n-aid going into the weekend. Auburn had 39 names on the dotted line. The Tide’s top signee was quarterback Pat Trammell of Scottsboro. Local Bama and War Eagle fans greeted these developments with undisguised glee.
Dec. 16, 1957-Mrs. B. M. Brooks, Hartselle 2, should be well enough today to go home from Decatur’s Bank Street Hospital tomorrow.
Dec. 17, 1957-Fourteen prisoners bound for Kilby from different parts of north Alabama bunked up for the night last night in the Morgan County jail. These plus five resident inmates headed for Montgomery this morning.
Dec. 17, 1957-Three miscreants faced Hartselle Mayor John Burleson in municipal court this morning. All were convicted of running a red light, public drunkenness, or reckless driving.
Dec. 18, 1957-API President Ralph Draughon says a filibuster in the Alabama Legislature during the last session is responsible for the recent loss of accreditation by the college of engineering. Local alums are very concerned about this development.
Dec. 19, 1957-Students at MCHS and the Hartselle elementary school are now on their Christmas vacations. They will be out of class until Jan. 2.
Dec. 19, 1957-Coy Turney is the student of the month at MCHS. Coy is a multi-talented student athlete.
