Falkville Lions Club in cooperation with local schools, churches and businesses played Santa on Saturday by distributing boxes and bags of canned goods and fruit to needy families and individually wrapped gifts to their children. Earlier in the week, club members delivered food boxes to about 50 senior citizen households in the area.
Each family received a box of fruit and several bags of canned goods (depending on the number of persons in each household). In addition, they received a large package of toilet tissue, a blanket and a Bible.
Each child received an age-appropriate wrapped gift and was allowed to choose two or three unwrapped gifts from a large collection of toys, games and stuffed animals donated by Halbrooks Auction Co. and its patrons.
Over 2,500 cans of the food that was distributed were donated by students at Falkville Elementary School and Falkville High School. High school students and staff also donated $736 in cash to help fund the project. Other funding came from two Lions fundraiser, a turkey shoot and a golf tournament. Lawrimore Trailer Co. of Falkville donated a trailer to be auctioned.
Lions President Ronnie Richards coordinated the project. He also had the help of other club members and their spouses. Falkville High FFA advisor Shane Bryan and several of his students assisted in the distribution of canned food.
