Tournaments a holiday tradition

In the midst of holiday celebrations, splendid feasts and traditional gift-giving, there will be plenty of great action on the hardcourt this week.
Christmas tournaments annually signal the midpoint of the season as team’s prepare for the final run to the area, regional and state tournaments.
The only area team not participating in a tournament this weekend is Brewer’s girls’ team. The Lady Patriots participated in the DAR tournament last week.
Hartselle’s boys have won four straight games heading into the Big Blue Classic at Brewer that opened Thursday.
The Tigers will put that win streak on the line with a first-round game at 3 this afternoon against Arab.
Brewer takes on Columbia in the first round at 6 p.m.
The championship game will be played Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Other teams in the tournament include Lawrence County, East Limestone, Decatur Heritage and Fairview.
Hartselle’s girls will play in the 2007 Decatur Orthopaedic Clinic Classic this week, opening up against Buckhorn Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Three local teams will be playing in the annual Speake Christmas Tournament.
The tournament, which features seven girls’ teams and six boys’ tournaments.
All of the teams will play at least three games in three days.
The Falkville Blue Devils will face Tharptown Thursday morning.
The consolation games and the championship will be played Friday.
Falkville and Danville will both play Thursday in the second round of the tournament. The Blue Devils will face Phillips at 1 p.m. today, while Danville will battle Hatton at 4 p.m.
Both of Priceville’s teams will be on the road for tournaments this week. The Lady Bulldogs will be participating in the Hayden Tournament, while the Bulldogs will play in the Elkmont Tournament.
The Danville Lady Hawks will continue in the Walker High School Christmas Tournament.
Teams won’t return to regular season play until the first week of January, just three weeks before the Morgan County tournament.
