SPEAKE - Falkville needed to come out of the Christmas break on a high note.
Blue Devils’ head coach Yancey Randolph hopes that a 58-53 win over rival Danville in the third-place game of the Speake Christmas Tournament is a step in the right direction.
The win, which evened the Blue Devils’ record at 7-7, was the second over the Hawks in three meetings so far this season.
Joseph Lacey scored 21 points to pace Falkville. Zac Moore added 13 in the win, while Steven Lindsey added 11 points.
Trevor Mayer chipped in nine points for the Blue Devils, who finished the tournament with a 2-1 mark after also beating Covenant Christian. The Blue Devils’ only loss of the tournament came against runner-up Phillips.
Roger Smith had a game-high 26 points for Danville. David Long added 15.
Danville trailed by as many as six points in the first half after Falkville hit back-to-back 3-pointers for a 19-13 margin. But the Hawks battled back to tie the game with a 3-pointer from Russell Standridge.
Danville held the lead just once in the third quarter, but the Hawks kept the game close and tied the game again with the first five points of the fourth quarter.
The Hawks never led again.
Falkville went on an 8-2 run to grab a 51-45 lead with 2:30 remaining.
But Danville never got closer until Roger Smith hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final 40 seconds to trim the final margin to five points.
