Jan. 3, 1958-James Smith is the Falkville FFA future farmer of the year. He has already netted about $3,500 from his crops.
Jan. 4, 1958-A local grocery is currently offering two six-bottle cartons of Cokes for 49 cents. Biscuits are ten cents a can.
Jan. 5, 1958-”Meet the Press” is a must-watch for local residents interested in being fully informed on current events. It comes on at 5 Sundays on Channel 13.
Jan. 6, 1958-Funeral services were conducted today at Union Hill Baptist Church for Mrs. Robert G. Parker who passed away a couple of days at the Hartselle home of her son, Grady Parker. Mrs. Parker’s beloved husband died less than a month ago.
Jan. 6, 1958-Pat Sandlin, a local ABC officer, died today. He had been a liquor control agent for the past 15 years and passed away due to a heart attack suffered while conducting a raid on a still near Mooresville. Mr. Sandlin was a Morgan County deputy sheriff while his brother, Street Sandlin, held the top job.
Jan. 6, 1958-The secretary of the Hartselle Chamber of Commerce has mailed out ballots containing the names of men who have been nominated to serve on its board. They are Charlie Beene, Ollie Camp, Gordon Francis, Jack Hoffhaus, Ernest Maddox and Orville Tanner. Garvice Nicholson, Robert Street, and Bill Stewart are rotating off.
Jan. 7, 1958-The State superintendent of education, Dr. Austin Meadows, said today that Alabama’s public schools were in bad shape. “We have no excuse for maintaining the type of system we now have,” he said. Two-thirds of all high school kids are attending non-accredited institutions.
Jan. 8, 1958-Mr. and Mrs. Joe Slaten were able to take their new baby daughter home from Decatur General this morning.
Jan. 9, 1958-Salk vaccine shots are being administered here in Hartselle today and tomorrow. These vaccinations are free to anyone under 20 who has not previously received protection from the dreaded disease of polio.
Jan. 9, 1958-The Morgan County Cattlemen’s Association held its annual dinner meeting at Decatur’s Cornelian Hotel tonight. New members of the board of directors will be James E. Peck and Horace Roberts of Hartselle and Sam Lile of Trinity. Others prominent on the program were L. T. Wagnon, former county agent, and Charles Rowe, former MCHS vo-ag teacher.
