Somerville student to serve as intern
By Staff
Rebecca Hodgen of Somerville has been selected to serve as a legislative intern during the upcoming 2008 regular session of the Alabama Legislature. Only one out of every three students to apply is approved to participate in the highly competitive and prestigious program.
The Capital Intern Program, which is directed by the Alabama Law Institute, places qualified students in positions in various government offices, including the offices of the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and attorney general. In addition, some students are assigned roles in the Alabama State Senate and House of Representatives. Participation in the program lasts just over four months and pays a one-time stipend of $3,600 in order to help defray expenses.
Hodgen currently attends Auburn University where she is studying public relations management. While at Auburn, she has served as a research assistant at the Canine Detection and Research Institute, which trains canines to detect the presence of explosives and other dangerous materials.
In addition to serving as an officer in the Silver Wings professional service organization at Auburn, Hodgens’ volunteer activities have included work with Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together, Reading is Fundamental and serving as a babysitter at Maxwell Air Force Base for spouses of deployed personnel.
The 2008 regular session convenes on Feb. 5 in Montgomery.
