Jan. 10, 1958-Local Tide football fans were interested to learn today that Coach Bear Bryant had added former Texas Aggie Eugene Stallings, an all-Southwest Conference end under the Bear during his playing days, as an assistant coach with duties to be determined later. The new coach is 24. There are academic problems. Bryant said that, “Half of the squad is in trouble scholastically. I’m alarmed about it.”
Jan. 11, 1958-One hundred thirty-five books have been given to the Hartselle public library by the Book Lovers’ Club. Mrs. Arthur Bean is president of this group.
Jan. 11, 1958-There are many more calls between Hartselle and Decatur than before they were made toll-free. Before that happened there were about 400 calls daily. Now there are ten times that many, about 4,000 within any 24 hours.
Jan. 12, 1958-Hartselle workers at Redstone and other federal
installations will get a 7 1/2 cents per hour pay raise if legislation now working its way through Congress is passed and signed by President Eisenhower.
Jan. 13, 1958-Enquirer editor and publisher Jack Hoffhaus was inaugurated as the new president of the Hartselle Chamber of Commerce at a board meeting tonight. The vice-president will be Hugh Penn, Hartselle’s acting postmaster. Ernest Maddox and Ollie Camp are new members of the board of directors.
Jan. 14, 1958-Decatur attorney James M. “Jimmy” Bloodworth spoke at tonight’s meeting of the Hartselle Kiwanis Club. His topic was “The Illegal Trial of Jesus.”
Jan. 14, 1958-The MCHS Tigers had a big basketball win over arch-rival Decatur tonight. Jim Ledbetter led Hartselle in scoring with 14 points. Lothian Smallwood and Scotty Maples also scored in double digits. The final score was 50-35 in the local team’s favor.
Jan. 15, 1958-Dr. Otis Kirby, superintendent of the Decatur district of the Methodist church, showed slides of the preaching mission he took to South America recently. Members of Salem Methodist hosted Dr. Kirby.
Jan. 16, 1958-The MCHS Tigers had their annual football awards banquet tonight in the basement of the First Methodist Church. State Rep. Bob Gilchrist was the featured speaker. Jimmy Mayfield was recognized as the star player on the ‘57 squad. Runners-up were Don Aldridge, Sherman Burch, and Don Summerford.
