MCHS class of ‘64 reunites and remembers favorite teachers
Staff reports
Several members of the class of 1964 from Morgan County High School, now called Hartselle High School, honored one of their favorite teachers, Coach J. P. Cain, on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at the Cabin Grill in Hartselle. He is still affectionately called “Coach” by all the students. Also being honored but not attending was Coach Mary Entrekin Rodgers, who was and is still called “Ms. E” by most of the students. Attending were Hazel Bentley Kine, Emlie Burgess Carroll, Buddy Glasscock, Freddie Glasgow, Mike Wiggins, Wayne White and wife Dottie, Sarah Looney Gupton, Gail Griffith Sides, Frances Holt, Larry Lemmond, and Diane Steverson Fowler and husband Ronny.
Coach Cain proudly wore his school jacket with Hartselle Tigers on the front. Freddie Glasgow brought his scrapbook, which had many pictures of the Coach with the 1964 football team and old newspaper clippings of their winning days. A big highlight was Coach Cain’s hand-sketched football plays from 1964. The Coach and football players attending remembered each play like it was yesterday. Larry Lemmond brought his ceramic replica of the old school building. The old historical building was beautiful but had to be torn down in the 70’s. Looking at the replica brought back many memories. Everyone was looking it over and remembering which side faced Sparkman Street, where the library was located, which room was Mrs. Nicholson’s, which window offered the best breeze, and sitting on the steps between classes.
The class of 1964 meets each month to share memories and plan their 45th reunion, which is scheduled for June 6, 2009. Any students who attended Morgan County High School during that time is welcome to join them and all students who graduated in 1964 are asked to attend as often as possible. For information on dates and times to meet, please contact Gail Griffith Sides or Hazel Bentley Kine.
