Mrs. Bennett died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born Sept. 19, 1922, in Lawrence County to John Newton Aldridge and Dovie Idella Stephenson Aldridge.
She married her late husband, Berval Bennett, on March 17, 1942, St. Patrick’s Day. They enjoyed 58 years together before his death in 2000. Together, they overcame life’s many adversities, raised a family, enjoyed laughter, bore each other’s burdens and were seldom seen one without the other.
After raising her children, Trannie returned to school at Calhoun Community College and went on to become a registered nurse. She was administrator of the former Block-Chandler Hospital and Pineview Nursing Home. After retiring, she went on to work for several years as the company nurse at GE in Decatur.
A lifelong Democrat, she was very active in the Democratic Party of Morgan County, campaigning year after year for the candidates in whom she believed.
She was also a devoted member of her church, Wesley Memorial United Methodist in Decatur, where she attended the Center Courts Sunday School Class, raised money for charity through the Sundowners and worked with shut-ins through the Caregivers ministry.
She is survived by a son, Berval W. Bennett and wife Sandi of Decatur; a daughter, Louise Ball of Decatur; three grandchildren, Ashley Wayne Bennett, William Adam Bennett and Brenda Roper Pass; five great-grandchildren, Sophia Anne Catherine Bennett, Abigail Aldridge Pass, Dora Abrielle Pass, Nathanael Thomas Pass and Christopher and James Pass.
Pallbearers will be Ashley Bennett, Adam Bennett, Dennis Griffith, Jimmy Reed, Walt Brooks, Don Mills, Robert Haynes, Joel Pass and Tommy Reed (honorary pallbearer).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wesley United Methodist Church Casting the Vision Fund.
