Jan. 24, 1958-A Hartselle cab driver was arrested today returning from Huntsville with booze for Hartselle clients unable to purchase it legally in this dry community. Huntsville is wet and its state store is a popular destination for people hereabouts.
Jan. 24, 1958-”Mama’s Baby Boy,” a three-act comedy, was staged by the Falkville High junior class tonight in the school gym. Mrs. J. P. Eden directed the hilarious play which starred James Sandlin and Evelyn Penn.
Jan. 25, 1958-MCHS came from behind to beat Austinville 66-62 in a Morgan County quarter-final basketball game tonight. Jerry Atkins made the clutch shot that gave the Tigers a 64-62 lead with less than a minute showing on the clock. Coy Turney padded MCHS’s margin with another FG just before the buzzer sounded.
Jan. 26, 1958-Circuit Judge George Wallace of Clayton was the first to qualify as a candidate for governor today at Democratic Party headquarters in Montgomery. Local Chevy dealer Bill Stewart will serve as Wallace’s Hartselle campaign manager.
Jan. 27, 1958-Dr. and Mrs. John T. Burch of Hartselle celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary today. A party was given in their honor by a daughter, Mrs. Max Sobotka, and Mr. Sobotka.
Jan. 28, 1958-A local tire store is offering the best tires Firestone makes for $13.25 each. These tires feature the new non-skid tread design.
Jan. 29, 1958-MCHS beat Falkville 51-45 tonight to move into the semi-finals of the Morgan County senior boys basketball tournament. Lothian Smallwood provided the clutch basket that sealed the Tigers’ victory.
Jan. 29, 1958-Ruth Thompson, Hartselle elementary school teacher, met with the city council tonight to request financial support to assist in the establishment of a regional library here.
Jan. 30, 1958— The Morgan County board of voter registrars is accepting applications at the courthouse today. This is the last day for people to register to vote. To become a voter you have to pay the annual $1.50 poll tax plus be 21 and a bona fide Alabama resident.
Jan. 30, 1958-Local War Eagle fans will be headed to the plains for more big games this fall. The Auburn ‘58 football schedule includes home games with both Maryland and Wake Forest. Ralph (Shug) Jordan will be in his eighth season as head coach. Of course, the Alabama game will be played in Birmingham. The site of this game will never be changed.
