Some 50 military personnel from this area serving in Iraq and Afghanistan will get a pleasant surprise in two or three weeks when they answer mail call and find they have a care box from the students at Hartselle Junior High School.
Members of the school’s Good Deeds Club adopted the project by popular vote at the beginning of the school year and started collecting names and addresses of local military personnel serving in those two war-torn countries. Each homeroom was challenged to provide enough supplies to fill at least one box after the Christmas break and make cash contributions to help defray the cost of postage.
The care boxes were filled and addressed Jan. 23 and were scheduled for shipment later in the week. They contain personal hygiene items, socks, magazines, books and movies. One of them will have an I-pod. It’s recipient will probably come from the luck of a draw, Kimbrell said.
Each box also contains a letter from a student.
Cheyenne Sanchez added, “I think it’s great that we’re doing something for soldiers who are giving up this time in their lives to serve their country. The least we could do was something that will make their happy.”
The club strives to do at least one good deed each month, Kimbrell said. “We adopted a family for Christmas but this is the biggest project we’ve done so far this year.”
