Brewer wins with a team plan

Brewer head girls’ basketball coach Ricky Allen would have loved nothing more than to turn point guard Emily Dabbs loose in the final minutes of the Class 5A, Area 13 championship game Monday night when the Lady Patriots needed a big spark.
No such luck.
Dabbs was sitting on the bench providing nothing more than moral support as Brewer battled rival Hartselle in overtime after suffering a season-ending knee injury in a game against Grissom.
The Lady Patriots’ lineup, that used Dabbs’ outside shooting threat to open up opportunities inside, needed to have some players step up down the stretch as Brewer tries to put together a run at the Class 5A state championship.
With a starter out for the year, Allen needed to see some increased production for some of the team’s other players in the area tournament.
Meagan Hormel stood up before the final and took a big leadership role.
Hormel wasn’t alone.
Morgan Crawley fared well in the championship with 11 points while running the Lady Patriots’ offense before fouling out in the second half.
And Chelsey Smith did her part, scoring 10 points off the bench. And Krista Hughes with eight rebounds.
It was, indeed, a team effort and a team victory.
